When I first moved to Fishhawk, I looked for the best gyms and/or personal trainers near me. Since I didn’t want to drive to Brandon, it had to be within the Lithia, Riverview, or Valrico, Fl areas.
This blog is based on my own research and will help you figure out what to look for and give you a few solid options locally so you don’t have to spend hours digging through reviews and visiting locations like I did.
How to Choose the Right Personal Trainer in Lithia, FL
Not all personal trainers are created equal.
Anyone can get a certification. That doesn’t mean they know how to coach (this is an action – not just a title), how to assess your form to prevent injury, or how to adjust for your age, lifestyle, or goals.
Some trainers are going to focus on making you sweat. If you’re gasping on the floor at the end of a session and sore for three days, they consider that a job well done.
Nothing wrong with huffing and puffing, but that’s not the standard you should be using. Your coach should consider how well you recover from workouts just as much as what you do during the session.
There are seasons for going balls to the wall intensity, but if you’re in this for the long haul and you want to feel strong, capable, and healthy as you age, you need a trainer who pays attention and trains with intention.
Here’s what to ask as you consider which coach to go with:
- Do they focus on strength training, not just cardio or circuits?
- Can they explain why you’re doing something, not just what to do?
- Do they adjust exercises based on your ability or pain points?
- Do they actually watch how you move and correct you?
- Do they have a plan that progresses, or are they winging it?
- Do they push intensity every session, or do they respect recovery?
- Do you actually like working with them?
If your session feels rushed or sloppy, or if your trainer is staring at their phone rather than paying keen attention and giving feedback, you’re not getting what you’re paying for.
Personal Trainer vs Group Classes: What’s the Difference?
A lot of gyms around Fishhawk offer group classes. They can be a great option depending on what you need.
Group classes are:
- structured
- high energy
- good for accountability
You show up, follow along, and get a workout in without thinking too much about it and you do it with others. That can be a lot of fun and they can be a great entry point if you’re just getting started.
But if your goal is to build muscle and get stronger, there comes a point where you need a structured program that progressively increases weight. That’s hard to do in a group class setting as the vast majority focus on lighter weights and higher reps.
In a class setting:
- the workout isn’t built for you
- the pace is set for the group
- coaching is limited
- form corrections (if any) are brief or inconsistent
That doesn’t make classes bad. It just means they serve a different purpose.
Working with a personal trainer is different. A good trainer:
- adjusts exercises based on your body and limitations
- pays attention to how you move
- progresses your training over time
- builds something around your goals, not the group’s
If you’re brand new, either option will get you started in a good direction. But if you want to build muscle and strength or need modifications, one on one training is the way to go.
You can also do both. My current state is strength training on my own and doing classes once or twice a week just for the fun of it.
Why Form and Technique Matter More Than You Think
Most people judge a workout by how sweaty or exhausted they feel. “No pain, no gain”, right?
Babes, that’s a low bar – and it’s wrong.
A workout might suck, but it should never hurt. Pain could indicate that your form is off, and if your form is off, you can:
- reinforce poor movement patterns
- overload joints instead of muscles
- create chronic dysfunction and pain
- work hard without actually getting stronger
Good training should make your body feel stronger and more capable, not beat up. And a good trainer pays attention to how your body is moving and feeling in the moment and helps you adjust as needed.

When I first talked to the team at Hero’s I told them my concern about putting on weight and being out of shape. I also told them I have a tricky shoulder. The system they have is perfect. You work at your own pace, the trainer makes sure the exercises don’t hurt my shoulder and that I’m making progress. Amanda Campbell – FishHawk
- Location: multiple locations, but I take her Thursday night yoga class at Anytime Fitness in FishHawk.
- Offers: yoga therapy, personal training
- What clients say: No online reviews, but a woman in her class has raved to me twice about how Amanda’s yoga sessions have helped with her frozen shoulder. Her cueing in yoga sessions is very good and she’s knowledgeable about body anatomy and how muscles and joints are supposed to work, offering modifications for those with pain points.
Do You Need Nutrition Coaching From a Personal Trainer in Lithia?
Nutrition is the way you fuel your body for movement as well as recovery from exercise. It’s KEY to feeling your best. Some personal trainers in Lithia offer nutrition guidance. If they know what they’re talking about, it can be helpful, and a lot of coaches are doing good work trying to help people improve their health.
But sometimes an individualized approach works better, especially if you’re struggling to lose weight or just be consistent due to demands on your schedule and energy.
Building and/or changing habits is a real challenge! And a good coach will consider it their job to make change as easy as possible. When I coach my clients, we use an app to track their habits that uses daily checklists and reminders, so they know exactly what to do each day. And every task/goal is personalized.
There are a lot of good coaches out there, and not every approach fits every person. It may take some trial and error to find the right trainer for you so don’t give up if it’s not a perfect fit at first.
Don’t Want a Gym or Personal Trainer? Here’s What to Do.
Girl, clear some space in your garage or house. All you need to start is dumbbells or kettlebells. As long as you’re able to stick with it, you can do this without a gym or in person trainer. There are apps now that can give you a program! I can recommend a few – just ask in the comment box below or reach out to me on Instagram or Facebook (links below).
I also build custom workouts and offer limited in-person sessions to women in Fishhawk who want something simple to get started. If that’s you or you would like help getting your nutrition dialed in for muscle building or fat loss, send me a message.
